Kiwi vines

The traditional kiwi fruit (actinidia deliciosa) can be grown in warmer areas of the UK (hardy to -10º or -12º C)

provided it is given a sheltered sunny site, preferably against a south/south west facing wall, fence or covering a pergola. Protect flowers from late Spring frosts if necessary. The hardy kiwi fruit (actinidia arguta) withstands temperatures as low as -30º C producing smaller, smooth skinned fruits. Taste is similar to its larger fruiting relative and is wonderful for use in fruit salads or a variety of desserts. Grow similarly to the above. Both types are rich in Vitamin C.

Kiwi vines are extremely productive and unaffected by most pests and diseases. Grow the vines using a long spur pruning system. Prune during the winter when dormant to encourage fruiting. Plant 5.5 m apart in any well-drained soil which does not dry out excessively. Mulch in Spring to feed and retain moisture. Only a few varieties are self-fertile. Otherwise one male is required to pollinate 5-6 females.
