Currant bushes
Blackcurrants are easy to grow where adequate moisture is available in Summer and do well on clay soils. Plant in an open position, sheltered from cold Spring winds and late frosts. Prune out one third of the old growth annually and feed/mulch well with plenty of nitrogen and potash. One blackcurrant bush can produce up to 4.5 kg of fruit per year.
Redcurrants are heavy yielding bushes, invaluable for culinary use and freezing. Easy to grow as cordons, fans or standards where they can make an eye-catching feature against a fence or wall. Redcurrants thrive on most soils. Feed annually with good garden compost and a balanced organic feed. Plant 1.5 m apart.
Whitecurrants are grown as for redcurrants.
