Chestnut trees

Nut bushes are easy to grow and the nuts provide a nutritious addition to the diet and lend variety to the fruit garden.  They also create useful wildlife habitats while their colourful catkins brighten up late winter days.   Eat green in September or collect and store for winter use.  Generally cross pollination is required.

Hybrid varieties (Japanese-European) of sweet chestnut are suitable for growing throughout the UK but crop more consistently in southern areas on lighter soils. Neutral to slightly acidic conditions are ideal. Avoid chalk. Fruiting begins 2-4 years after planting. For the best crops, cross pollination is required. For a single tree, plant the variety Marigoule. All the varieties listed are heavy cropping and have been selected for their superior nut size.
